Alcohol Intoxication

Alcohol is literary a poison to a human organism. When a person is drunk, alcohol affects central nervous system functioning, provokes vegetative, neurological and mental disorders.

A healthy person has not more than 0,4 promille of alcohol, absorbed into blood from intestine during fermentation. One promille is 1/10 of a percent. If the number of blood alcohol level is higher, it means the person experiences alcohol intoxication.

Alcohol intoxication

In practice, both doctors and ordinary people consider alcohol intoxication only those cases when either person’s health or life is threatened. And in these cases, the blood alcohol level is several times higher. It is clear, that you cannot measure blood alcohol level at home, so people usually look at the state the drunk person is in.

There are three stages of alcohol abuse – light, medium and heavy. The first stage, with 2 promille of blood alcohol level, is characterized by state of euphoria, light skin redness, pupillary dilatation, increasing sweating, and often urges for urination. At this stage of alcohol abuse people tend to speak incoherently, more loud and expressive than when they are sober. This state does not last long and passes quickly.

If alcohol blood level around 2-3 promille, it means the medium state of alcohol abuse. At this stage of alcohol abuse a person wiggles while walking, his steps are not even and they can see double. The speech becomes unintelligible, they lose ability to judge the situation and their own actions and words. If you leave a person in this stage alone, he will soon fall asleep. Of course, in the morning, a person, who had a fair amount of drink the previous night, will experience faintness, strong thirst, lack of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

Alcohol intoxication and symptoms pointing out a heavy stage of alcohol abuse, occur when alcohol blood level is more than 3 promille. Being in state like this, a person can experience breathing disorder and even heart failure. Sometimes people become deaf and then sink into coma.

Acute alcohol poisoning with alcohol blood level turned into pure alcohol is 300-400 grams, consumed in a short period of time can cause death. Such symptoms as spasms, breathing troubles, excessive salivation, and blood vessels extension in whites indicate acute alcohol poisoning. 8 grams of pure alcohol per 1 kilo of person’s weight is a lethal dose.

In this case one needs rescue emergency care for acute alcohol intoxication, if neither shaking the patient’s body not giving him ammonia spirits helped. To help person recover from heavy alcohol intoxication he needs to be taken to the specialized hospital department, treating intoxications, otherwise person’s life stays under the threat.

What is dangerous in the state of being drunk? Chronical alcohol intoxication means regular poisoning of organism with alcohol breakdown products. When alcohol gets into human organism, it immediately goes to the liver, which functions as a factory, processing toxic substances. Under the alcohol effect, liver cells die, but at the same time this vitally important organ tries to restore and gives off a special enzyme to process alcohol. The side effect of this process is producing acetaldehyde, a substance very dangerous to human brain. Because of this substance people, consuming alcohol feel all hangover symptoms.

Alcohol intoxication symptoms:

  • Headache. It happens because of blood vessels widening after alcohol gets into blood.
  • Nausea, vomiting. Ethanol causes both, affecting cerebellum, which is responsible for equilibrium.
  • Dizziness. One can feel dizzy because of cerebellum disorder.
  • Strong thirst next morning after consuming alcohol. It happens because of the lowering level of antidiuretic hormone, increasing urination.

Even small amounts of alcohol can lead to alcohol intoxication, especially if alcohol is consumed by children, teenagers and people who are too weak after being ill. Even the small dose of alcohol, drunk by those people can cause such a strong alcohol intoxication that it might need special alcohol intoxication therapy.
